Picture of Powys

Named after the successor Kingdom of Powys, which was a petty kingdom and principality that emerged during the Middle Ages following the end of Roman rule in Britain, Powys is a principal area, local government county, and preserved county in Mid Wales. Powys was first created on 1 April 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972, but it was abolished on 1 April 1996 and reconstituted as a unitary authority. During the reconstitution, the communities of Llansilin and Llangedwyn were added from Glyndwr district in Clwyd. Powys was awarded Fairtrade County status by the Fairtrade Foundation in December 2007.

Some of the most interesting places in the area include caves systems, castles, lakes, walks, museum and exhibitions, and several reservoirs and waterfalls. Dolforwyn Castle was constructed between 1273 and 1277, and it is an example of Welsh castle design. Another castle from the same period is Powis Castle, which was the fortress of a dynasty of Welsh princes. In 1832, the castle was visited by Princess Victoria. Spreading across parts of Powys is a group of hills known as the Black Mountains. They are the easternmost of the four ranges of hills that comprise the Brecon Beacons National Park, one of three national parks in Wales.
