Vale Royal is a rural district in Cheshire in the west of England. Vale Royal was a government district from 1974-2009 with borough status in Cheshire. The district of Vale Royal was created in April 1974, under the government act 1972 this was done by merging Northwich and Winsford rural district. Vale Royal took its name from Vale Royal Abbey formerly one of the largest abbeys in England, and was situated in the village of Whitegate which is near the centre of the district. In 2006 it was considered by the Department for Communities and Local Government that reorganising Cheshire's administrative structure as part of the 2009 structural changes to local government in England. It was announced in July 2007 that Vale Royal was to be merged with the districts of Chester and Ellesmere Port and Neston, this was merged to create a single unitary authority, following a consultation period in which a proposal to create single Cheshire unitary authority was rejected. In April 2009 Vale Royal was abolished when the new Chesire and Chesire West unitary authority was formed.
